One month ago, we launched our Sentencing Hub – a new online resource designed to make information on sentencing in England & Wales clear, accessible, and evidence-based.
The official launch event, held in Parliament, brought together policymakers, academics, practitioners, and members of the voluntary and statutory sectors, with contributions from Jake Richards MP, Andy Slaughter MP, and other key voices in criminal justice.
We created the Sentencing Hub to make sentencing data and research more easily available to sentencers, policymakers, researchers, criminal justice practitioners, journalists and, of course, members of the public. And we are delighted to see that the Hub is enjoying lots of attention. To mark the Hub’s 1-month birthday, we wanted to share a glimpse into how it’s being used:
- In its first month, the Sentencing Hub had over 2,000 visitors from 10 different countries
- Our three most popular outputs so far are
- our offence snapshots, which present data on sentencing outcomes for different offences in interactive graphs,
- our key facts infographics, which present information on different sentencing issues in a digestible form,
- and our research on Community Orders, including research on their impact and effectiveness.
- So far, visitors have downloaded over 400 of our research papers, graphs, and infographics.

Sentencing practice and debate in England and Wales are always evolving, with new legislation and public debate shaping approaches to punishment and rehabilitation. We created the Sentencing Hub to ensure that these discussions are informed by rigorous evidence. By making data and research readily accessible, our aim is to support transparent debate, effective policy-making, and greater public understanding of how sentencing works in practice.
We are continuously adding new content to the Hub — from updated offence snapshots to new key fact infographics and research papers. If you haven’t explored it yet, we invite you to visit and see how this resource can support your work or curiosity about sentencing.
With the Report Stage of the new Sentencing Bill due to start on January 6th, this is a great opportunity to engage with the latest research and data on sentencing.
